"Shanghai Express" and "The Good Earth" are two old time Hollywood black and white movies. Both got Oscar best cinematography award and a Chinese based storyline. I got this two movies in VHS format in 1998. Back then, there is no DVD version. Even the VHS version was in back order. Meaning, the studio only publish them when the requested buying amount get to a certain number. I ordered them half a year earlier. Finally got them delivered from Amazon. I bought a then expensive Panasonic VHS video cassette recorder just to play this two movies. In "Shanghai Express", both Marlene Dietrich and Anna May Wong were elegantly dressed (as you can see in image 2~4). Anna May Wong (image 4) was suppose to play the role of either first wife (image5) or second wife (image6) in "The Good Earth". But the studio finally decided to give the roles to western actresses. However, the leading role - Olan (first wife) played by Austrian actress Luise Rainer was a sensational performance dynamite, which got her an Oscar best actress award that year (she was the winner the previous year too!). I love all roles played by Luise Rainer and virtually all movie she was in.
