I start my digital photographing with Canon S110 back in 2002. That's when very few people saw compact digital camera. I ordered s110 the second day it released in the US. I can still see my passion in these shots. (more images)

What settings did you use for the camera for them to turn out so nicely?

Hello !
Your night pics are amazing! I agree with you that ISO-50 and longer shutter would be perfect features for this little toy. You said your S110v+ your tripod still lighter that G1. I geuss so it's your own little trick. If it is not a secret what kind of tripod do you use? And your old as our sin world idea with self-timer works wery well again(!): plain and smart.

Your Picture Gallery
Hi,
I was looking at some postings on the Canon Talk Forum and came across your
posting and picture gallery. These pictures are beautiful! Are they right
from the camera or have they been manipulated with a software program? The
colors and lighting are wonderful. The composition is great too, but that's
due to the photographer (congratulations). I was just wondering if I should
expect these types of results. I am expecting my S20 on UPS any day now.
I'm new to digital photography, but looking forward to experimenting. Any
advice is appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Great pictures. I have a question regarding converting avi to mpg or
whatever. I have created web pages with many of my pictures in order to
create a cd that is viewable via MS Internet Explorer. I include the movies
with a <EMBED SRC=MVI_xxxx.avi> tag in the page. I also included on the cd
an autorun.inf file that automatically starts MSIE and loads my first page.
If you have patience and/or a fast internet connections you can find some
pictures of a recent trip at http://1webblvd.com/alaska My problem is I find
that on some computers windows media player works fine, the movies load and
play nicely. On others I get audio only no video. I haven't figured out what
needs to be loaded on the computer to make the movies play properly, but it
would be nice if these avi files would play on all computers. I installed
quicktime on one of the computers which had the problem and although I could
load and play an avi file with quicktime, it did not resolve the fact that
MSIE would load MS media player in the webpage and give me sound only. Any
ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers,
Bob

very impressive shots, ! all your daytime shots looked great! the flowers could use a little tweaking, though. i do not know what or how to do it, but i remember seeing sample shots from canon's website of a similar subject. canon claims that these were not software-modified in any way, and simply adjusted the manual settings. your flower picture was just a sharp as canon's, but the colors were a tad "off" in hue. but your night shots were breath-taking as well. are there any online tutorial sites that teach newbies some tips on (digital) photography? are you a pro photographer yourself? your pics certainly dont look amateur to me.
----------------------------------------------------
,
Your shots using the 110 were really good. My question is the model. Is
the 110 the same as the IXUS 300 marketed here in Australia? The differing
models manufactured for differing countries can confuse one when looking at
international web sites.
Out of interest, did you buy yours locally or overseas? I am just about
to commit on a digital camera and the IXUS 300 seems to have what I want and
judging by your pix, if it is the same model, the results might be the
decider.
Cheers,

I'm very impressed with your night shots.
I've had my Ixus for abotu 6 months mainly as a snap camera.. but am having real problems with night shots. I gues the key is a tripod. I have a few questions for you
1) Is it possible to manually set aperture and shutter speed or are these indirect by using the different flash options?
2) Were they all taken with 0 exp compensation, cos I tend to get huge glare from lights at night, but maybe that's related to camera shake?
3) Slow synchro is excellent for people shots but again I get maaad blurring
4) Did you sharpen your photos digitally?
5) Are there programs to digitally remove camera shake effect?
6) I presume those night shots were just taken with flash off...
7) Do you generally use the Half-press lock feature thingy when taking photos? I seem to have metering problems when too much light in shot (SKY) how to i compensate and take a good photo ?
Cheers for you help

The day shots are good, but so are those from most digicams.
The night shots were AMAZING! Almost ethereal, like artwork that you airbrushed. Tell us more about how to take such good photos, please!
My friend just bought a S300 and lots of the outdoor photos look good but the indoor photos (especially those with poor lighting) look dark and crappy. I'm sure its b/c of the low light situation, b/c the indoor ones where there is lots of ambient sunlight coming into the room, look fine. In situations with low light (especially indoors) is it better to shut off the flash as says, or go to the slow synchro? What is the best course of action? Or is it all about holding the camera steady and does the light factor have less to do with the quality of the shots?

Having looked at your work, you are obviously serious about your photography. There is some really nice stuff there. Perhaps you will be one of those whose G2 work could rival Pekka's G1 gallery if the G2 is your choice. I upgraded from the G1 to the G2 partially because of the improved manual control when using flash, but manual control is certainly a strong point for both the G1 and G2. I really don't know about the S40 - I need the hotshoe, so I haven't even looked at it, but I love my G2, even though I'm no Pekka. :)

Wow, you just sold me on the S110. I've been looking for a good, small point-and-shoot camera, and I've been close to buying an s110 for about a month now, but the lack of nightshot ability that I've read on most reviews has been something that has kept me back. I guess you prove that good nightshots can be done, as long as you're intelligent about the shot selection. Those are impressive shots.
I think the G2's ability to have add-on lenses and filters, the slightly faster lens, the hot shoe, the swivel LCD, better battery life, and remote control would beat out the pocketability advantage (which, to me, is a huge thing) that the S40 has, considering you have the S110 already. For me at least, I think an S110/S300 and a G2 would be the perfect pairing of point-and-shoot and prosumer cameras. I think the forth-coming Nikon Coolpix 5000 might be a good alternative to the G2, as well. Of course, this is just my opinion.

Some pretty darn good night shots there . Im going to ask a silly question so bear with me as im an amateur but was a tripod used in those shots? And if so, which function on the Ixus V did you use? Im going to the Gold Coast and Sydney really soon and hope to take similar shots like that. Wouldnt mind investing in a table top tripod as well.
Some advice if you please. =)

Wow those are 110v's?! Damn, I don't recall it being *that* good. Was the exposure compensaton all the way up? I probably missed that when I had it.
Keep in mind it's a bit hard to compare my shots with those, as those are nice city landscapes. I am sur ethe S230 would do a good job *except* that even in night shots I can see CA's. The S110v had virtually none.

The 110v only has "auto iso" from 100-150 if I remember correctly. On the other hand, the S110v has near zero CA's and didn't suffer from excesive blooming resulting in an usually sharper picture than the S200.
Now you can see why I loved the S110v so much :-) Someone else mentioned that a Canon guy told him that one key reason the S200/S330 were cheaper than 110v/S300 is the lens is different. Does not surprise me one bit.
Another reason is of course, the S110v was better built compared to the S200/S230 ( the metal casing was sturdier).

I guess that convinced me to get the s110, since i've always been searching for its low-light capabilities. (not super great, but quite good for such a small camera),
Just wondering, did you take the shots with any EV compensation at all?
