Tokina 80-400mm test1

Tokina 80-400mm for Nikon test

I got a Tokina 80-400mm for my Nikon D90. This is the lens with Kenko 1.4x teleconverter attached.
I know that Tokina 80-400mm is not a lens getting good reviews in terms of image quality. To me though, tele side is not my major interest. Tokina 80-400mm is the best built and the most compact 400mm in the world. All other 400mm's are all heavy and big like monsters.

Tokina 80-400mm is a lens that doesn't have a built-in IS unlike the others. But for that matter, what's the point and the big deal to have IS when you cannot hand held them in the first place, being that they are way too heavy and too big for you to do that or willing to do that.

Even for this world's smallest 80-400mm, I still 'have to' get a Benro Carbon Fiber MonoPod.

In the image, from left to right: Tokina 80-400mm, Nikon/Nikkor 18-200mm VRII, Tokina 12-24mm, and Nikon/Nikkor 50mm 1.8D.
The Monopod is dedicated to Tokina 80-400mm. And it is considerably lighter than the Benro Carbon Fiber Tripods I have. The fact is, like it or not, Tokina is suitable only for use in day light outdoor. And no one takes a tripods on bright day light for outdoors.

So, now I have 3 Nikon lens and 2 Tokina lens. (GUILTY!)
I cannot think of any new lens I will be getting. As I have already covered 12mm-600mm (400mm with the Kenko 1.4x teleconverter attached. Yes, 600mm as shown in camera info reading. Not 560mm, due to the fact that 1.4x converter is actually a bit larger than 1.4x or 400mm is actually a bit longer than 400mm.)

12-600mm for Nikon D90 equals 18-900mm on a 35mm camera.

This is Tokina 80-400mm next to Kenko 1.4x teleconverter and Tokina close up lens for 80-400mm.

* Kenko 1.4x teleconverter allows auto-focus in Tokina 80-400mm with Nikon D90.
* The close up lens allows Tokina 80-400mm to focus and to be used on the nearby objects. Like indoor objects.

Will do a bit of testing in the next post
